Buying smart glasses for someone who wears glasses

Do you need their prescription?

Only if the glasses should arrive with prescription lenses. Ray-Ban's terms ask for a prescription "obtained within the last 24 months", and its prescription FAQ also asks for the pupillary distance (PD). The FAQ adds that state rules on prescription validity vary, and that Ray-Ban will cancel orders sent with an out-of-date prescription.

You don't need the prescription at checkout. Ray-Ban lets you enter or upload it before checkout, upload it later in "My order details", or email it to RXservice@ray-ban.com or text it to 58381 with the order number. That leaves time to ask for it without spoiling the surprise.

The person you're buying for is entitled to a copy. Under the FTC's Eyeglass Rule, eye doctors must give patients their prescription immediately after a refractive eye exam, whether or not they ask. PD isn't required by federal law, but some states require it on the prescription, and the FTC encourages doctors to give it to patients. Don't try to read a prescription off an old pair of glasses. If it's wrong, the lenses may not be returnable.

Route A: buy the glasses with prescription lenses

Ray-Ban.com. Ray-Ban's terms list 40% off prescription lenses added to a pair of Ray-Ban Meta until 8 Nov 2026, plus the dated offers in the deals table below. You can cancel within one hour of ordering. If the prescription you entered was wrong, the one-hour window is the time to cancel and reorder; after that, email Ray-Ban's prescription team. For holiday orders, the return window is 60 days for orders placed 2 to 9 Nov, 50 days for 10 to 19 Nov and 45 days from 20 Nov.

Meta.com. Meta's terms say its standard 30-day return policy applies to products with prescription lenses, as long as you submit a valid prescription. Gift orders can hide the price and include a gift message. The sender has to start any return, and the refund goes back to the sender, not the recipient.

Route B: give the frame, they order the lenses

This is the safer choice if you can't get the prescription, or if they might prefer a different lens type. Vision Global advises it too: give the glasses first, then order lenses once you have the prescription and PD.

• Certified retailer or Ray-Ban.com/Meta.com: keeps the manufacturer warranty intact.
• Independent lab: usually cheaper, but Ray-Ban says the warranty only stays intact with a certified retailer. Starting prices from our lab pages: Lensology from $47, Vision Global from $75. See every lab or compare them side by side.
• Vision Global's sale runs 23 Nov to 6 Dec 2026 (PT). For delivery by 24 Dec, it says to order by 1 Dec with standard shipping or by 8 Dec with express. 8 Dec is after the sale ends.
• Model code: labs cut lenses to the frame. On Ray-Ban Meta it's printed inside the left temple arm (for example RW4008 53).

Gifts that can't wait for lenses later

• Meta Ray-Ban Display: the prescription is built into the display lens, so order it with prescription lenses (−4.00 to +4.00). It's $999 with prescription lenses in the US, per press reports. Ray-Ban.com gives Display products 14 days from shipping to return them, not 45.
• High or unusual prescriptions: Ray-Ban Meta covers −12.00 to +6.00 total power. The Gen 3 Aviator covers −6.00 to +4.00, and Meta's Store guide gives a different figure for Gen 2 (why the limits differ). Oakley Meta HSTN is −6.00 to +6.00 per the Meta Store and −6.00 to +4.00 per Oakley.com. Meta Glasses are −12.00 to +2.25.

Ray-Ban Meta's manufacturer warranty lasts one year from purchase (two years in the EU/EFTA), per Ray-Ban's FAQ.

Gift checklist

• Factory reset glasses you've already paired. A reset erases captures and unlinks your Meta account.
• Gift option and receipt. Meta.com gift orders can hide the price. Keep the order number and confirmation email; you'll need them for any return.
• Who returns it. On Meta.com the sender starts the return and gets the refund. Ray-Ban returns start with the order number and email used to order.
• FSA/HSA. Ray-Ban and Vision Global accept FSA and HSA payment for prescription lenses. It's the account holder's money, so this works when the recipient buys their own lenses.
• Order-by dates. Vision Global: 1 Dec (standard) or 8 Dec (express) for delivery by 24 Dec. Ray-Ban doesn't publish a holiday cutoff for prescription orders that we could find, so order early.
